Getting around the city should be much easier Monday, as Calgarians celebrated the grand opening of the new west leg of the LRT Saturday morning.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi, MP Rob Anders, Premier Allison Redford and Transportation Minister Ric McIver were in Calgary for the grand opening
The mayor kicked things off with a few words at the brand new West Kerby Station downtown, then took the controls for the inaugural run pulling the train into the new 69th Street Station for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Ernest Manning High hosted Redford, who spoke out the new transportation.
“We’re really proud as a government that we can continue to support MSI and put in that $1.3 billion that matters to the community, not just to west Calgary, but to all of Calgary, because this now allows us to link communities from the northeast to the southwest,” she said.
There was also a new funding announcement by the Tories, over $140 million in GreenTRIP funding for Calgary and Nenshi discussed what projects it’ll be used for.
“The new investments in that will largely go towards buying new LRT cars to alleviate crowding on the existing lines, a much needed investment,” he said. “As well as work on the new Southeast Transitway to significantly improve public transit in southeast Calgary.”
The new C-Train service does not officially start until Monday morning.
