An 81-year-old woman who suffered a debilitating stroke a week and a half ago has learned she’s not eligible for long-term care in this province.
According to officials with Alberta Health Services, it’s because Inez Allen has lived in Alberta less than a year.
Allen sold her home in New Brunswick and moved to Calgary to be with family six weeks ago.
AHS officials point out the elderly woman and her family have a few options, including returning her to New Brunswick for placement in a long-term care facility. Unfortunately Allen no longer has family in that province.
AHS also notes that after three months in Alberta, Allen is eligible for fully-funded home-care support, or her family could foot the bill for long-term care until she meets the one-year residency requirement to be admitted to a government facility.
