The Alberta Federation of Labour is calling on the province to boost the minimum wage.
It was hiked just three months ago however with a recent increase in Saskatchewan, Alberta again has the lowest minimum wage in the country.
“It shows how out-of-line this province is with the rest of the country,” Alberta Federation of Labour president Gil McGowan said. “During the three months that Alberta didn’t have the lowest, we had the second-lowest minimum wage.”
He would like to see the minimum wage rise to $ 10.25 an hour, which is calls a more realistic livable wage.
Richard Trsucott with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, says a boost in the minimum wage would hurt small business, adding many operators are already paying their employees more in order to retain them.
U of C economist Dr. Frank Atkins says outside of optics, Alberta does not need to hike it’s rate saying on average, Albertan’s enjoy the highest wages in the country.
Some 26,000 people in the province earn minimum wages, which are index to inflation, so another tweak is expected next fall.
