The Fraser Institute has released its annual ranking of the fiscal management scores of Canadian premiers.

Based on the 2011/2012 budget cycle, Alberta finished in the middle of the pack in 5th place.

The study’s author, Charles Lammam, says based on what they have seen so far from Premier Alison Redford, she likely won’t fair much better than her predecessor Ed Stelmach.

Stelmach was slammed for overestimating energy royalty revenue, not reining in spending and for not taking action to address the deficit.

Lammam says the study looks at things like tax policy and debt retirement, and everything in between.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale got top marks, with the worst score going to Manitoba’s Greg Selinger.

Lammam says the study might be boring to many, but it does help people rate the fiscal performance of their elected officials and where improvements can be made.
