Be ready to be pulled over at a Checkstop starting this week.

Calgary police and Alberta Sheriffs will be pulling over drivers this holiday season, hoping to stop drunk or high motorists from being behind the wheel.

CPS arrested four impaired drivers last year after pulling over 5,500 vehicles at holiday Checkstops, 39 other 24-hour suspensions were also issued for drug and alcohol offences.

Inspector Dean Lagrange says the numbers may seem small, but every bit makes a difference.

“If we can save one life, it’s worth it. How much is a life worth? And the issue with impaired driving is we never know if we stopped a fatality that night or not. All we can do is try, and hope that the public chooses properly.”

Lagrange says they also serve as a deterrent that may make someone coming home drunk from holiday celebrations think twice about driving.

Third year University of Calgary student Faryal Shah will be out along with officers talking to motorists.

Shah helped start S.A.I.L, Save an Innocent Life, back in January, after a friend of hers was killed by a drunk driver.

Arsh Brar turned 20 four days before he was killed, and Shah says he never drank or did drugs.

Shah explains to see someone who was so ambitious have their life taken away is devastating.

That’s why, she says, its nice to see motorists who are getting the message.

“The general response is always very positive. People always smile at you and tell you, ‘good job, thank you for coming out’, ‘its cold, you’re doing a good job’. So, that positive reaction just gives you the motivation to go out there and do it all over again the next time.”

Police are also relying on the public’s eyes and ears to uphold safety on the road, encouraging anyone with concerns to call 911.

Checkstops will be set up night and day at various locations around the city until New Year’s.
