Since Attainable Homes Calgary launched it’s program in 2009, over 6,000 people have signed up, signalling the need for more support for aspiring home owners.
Of those 6,000, about 1,400 have qualified for the program.
“We’ve seen home prices soar in Calgary on the back of strong migration and low vacancy rates,” said President and CEO David Watson.
The group is building about 200 units in 2013 to get more people in homes and need more builders to come on line to help them keep up with demand.
“Many people who register for our program have sufficient income to manage mortgage repayments, but haven’t been able to save the required down payment as a result of elevated monthly rent and the cost of living in Calgary.
“So far we’ve received 6,019 registrations via our website and 1,428 of those people have officially qualified for our program and are waiting for a home to purchase.
“To meet the high level of interest in our program, we have a number of exciting projects in our pipeline and are also speaking to local developers and builders to acquire more units that are either existing or partially constructed,” said Watson.
