The Bow building’s status as Calgary’s tallest skyscraper will apparently be short lived.

According to the Calgary Herald, Brookfield Properties has announced plans to build a  two-tower complex at First Street and 7th Avenue Southwest that will be 11 metres taller than the city’s most recent architectural marvel.

At one time, the site was the home of the Calgary Herald, dating back some 30 years ago.

Plans for the main tower of the building call for 56 storeys and 2.8 million square feet of office space. The developers point out that the commercial vacancy rate in downtown Calgary is currently running at less than one per cent. Interestingly, Brookfield recently lost its main tenant — Imperial Oil — at one of its other showcase properties, 5th Avenue Place, although that move isn’t taking place until 2016.

Alderman Druh Farrel is a fan of the project, currently referred to as 225 Sixth and Brookfield Place, saying the design is very simple, yet elegant. The plans call for a tapered top, a design the alderman favours for the city’s skyline, telling the Herald:  “They recognize:  not another box, please.”
