A national coalition has been launched that promises to tackle marijuana grow-ops and clandestine labs.

It’s called the National Council Against Marijuana Grow Operations and Clandestine Labs, and Calgary Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart is a co-chair.

She says the goal of the council is to fight for safe and healthier neighbourhoods.

“One of the problems, for example, is when people buy a new home, and they get a mortgage on it, and then they find out after the fact that the house was a grow op. We need a registry,” explains Colley-Urquhart.

The national council aims to find an approach to not only prevent the illegal operations, but detect and deter.
