The Calgary Catholic School District will make a decision on whether to lift a ban on the HPV vaccine in their schools Wednesday.

The school board has come under increasing pressure from health officials and some parents to allow Grade 5 and Grade 9 girls to get the vaccine for Human Papilloma Virus.

A public consultation has been completed at 104 schools in the board.

The Calgary Herald reports the vaccine has been banned in Calgary Catholic schools since 2008, in what the school board calls “a matter of faith.”

Bishop Fred Henry, who is in favour of keeping the ban, is concerned the vaccine may give girls mixed messages about premarital sex.
