A chilly wake-up call for some residents in an apartment building in the city’s N.E.
Fire crews, along with Enmax were called to the 600 block of 4th Avenue at around 3:00 Saturday morning following the discovery of sparks and smoke where electricity entered the building.
Then five of the 28 suites in the three-story building had to be evacuated after high CO levels were detected.
Residents were kept warm in a city bus while other accommodations were arranged.
Battalion Chief Larry Fisher tells 660News, this time of year it’s not uncommon for CO leaks to rise as dormant furnaces start working overtime, but there are a few things you can do to protect yourself.
He says dizziness, slurred speech and abnormal behaviour are all early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Residents will allowed to return to their homes around 6:30 a.m.
If you think you have detected a leak where you live, call the fire department immediately.
