Illegal campaign donations to be made public in new election act

Illegal donations will be made public in future provincial elections.

That’s just one of the changes being made to the Election Accountability Act, by the Alberta Government.

Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice, says under the amendment, financial disclosure of leadership campaign contributions will be required.

“Anything over $250 will be made public and in fact, all donations from $375 to $250 and that applies to leadership elections but that also applies throughout the entire legislation,” he says.

Under Bill 7, there will be stiffer fines for people who make illegal donations to political parties and municipal terms for politicians will grow from three years to four.

Meanwhile, the NDP are not biting at Tuesday’s announcement, saying the provincial Tories are still falling short and hiding information from Albertans.
