Black Friday is one of the most appealing U.S. events, drawing in thousands of Canadians every fall and Canada Border Services is trying to make it as easy as possible for Albertans.
Lisa White with the CBSA tells 660News, declaring everything you purchased is key, with receipts ready to present to the officer.
“Back on June 1st, our personal exemptions increased. If you’re gone from Canada for more than 24 hours, you’re now allowed to bring back $200 worth of goods, free of duty and taxes. If you’re gone for 48 hours or more, that’s gone up to $800 dollars,” she says.
White adds, when buying in the States, remember to check ahead with Canadian regulations.
“We want people to make sure the good they’re looking to buy are permitted in Canada because we don’t want any one to be disappointed. You know, when it doubt, leave it out,” she says. “But we certainly encourage people to plan ahead and part of planning, is making sure what you’re buying is allowed.”
The best times to cross are between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and again in the early evening.
White also reminds travellers, to check ahead when planning to cross the border.
