A city alderman says its time the city protects pedestrians in areas where construction is blocking sidewalks.

Alderman Druh Farrell says obstacles on sidewalks often put pedestrians in danger.

Farrell says the city needs to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians under structures on busy roadways.

Farrell tells The Calgary Sun other cities have bylaws on the issue, and Calgary needs to follow suit.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says they need to think through the rules already in place.
