The Amber Alert for three-year-old Alvin Barnett has been cancelled after the little boy was found safe and sound Friday morning.

The Montana State Amber Alert Coordinator says the toddler and his father were apprehended in the town of Whitefish, Montana.

Jennifer Viets says 39-year-old Robert Barnett is now in custody.

Police issued the Amber Alert when Alvin disappeared during a supervised visit with his father Thursday; officials feared the child was in imminent danger.

Investigators were on high alert in Montana after reported sightings of the pair.

US officials said the father and son were seen on video crossing the border into Eureka around 3:15 p.m. MST Thursday; the pair was also reportedly seen in a bakery in Missoula not long after that.

Investigators in Whitefish are crediting the help of a bystander in allowing them to track down Barnett.

Flathead County Undersheriff Dave Lieb tells 660News a local witness was approached last night by the 39 year old looking for money and the use of a phone.

He let the father and son sleep in front of his house, inside a 2002 Blue Subaru and promised to get them breakfast in the morning.

When he woke up, he saw the news, realized who was sleeping in front of his home and called 9-1-1.

Lieb says officers surrounded the car before 7AM MST and arrested Barnett without incident.

He says Alvin appears to be unphased.

“The child is safe and sound, he was a very happy and healthy little boy this morning, running around our office doing fine,” he says.

RCMP are hoping to have Alvin and Robert returned to Canada as soon as possible.

Given the abduction charges he’ll be facing in British Columbia, he believes charges in Montana are unlikely.
