An Alberta photographer is touring the country, in the midst of a decade-long mission to document life in Canada.
When he’s done, Tim Van Horn will have profiled 36 thousand Canadians, complete with a picture and a brief outline of who they are.
He’ll put all of them together for one massive Canadian flag mosaic in honour of the country’s 150th birthday.
“So each portrait, you know it’s only going to be two-by-three inches but it’s the story of what it symbolizes, that it’s more than ‘here’s each one’s portrait.’ You’ll be able to go to a number of websites and scroll through all 36 thousand portraits individually but you’ll also be able to stand in front of something that’s collectively using all those 36 thousand portraits,” says Van Horn.
The mosaic will be at least 30×100 feet and will be unveiled at a major Canadian museum in 2017.
