The snowstorm is leaving Calgary, but the city still has its hands full cleaning up messy roads.
Twenty-plus centimetres of snow have fallen on Calgary’s streets, leaving roads a slippery, snowy mess.
While computer maintenance issues have kept the city from issuing a snow parking ban, Mayor Naheed Nenshi says one could still be put in place sometime this weekend.
Meteorologist David Spence says the snow is headed out, but cold temperatures are sticking around for Remembrance Day ceremonies Sunday.
Spence anticipates temperatures will drop as low as -20 degrees Celsius with windchill Friday night and -17 degrees Celsius by Saturday afternoon.
EMS spokesperson Adam Loria tells 660News it’s important to stay warm.
“I definitely recommend dressing in layers, and trying to cover as much skin as possible,” says Loria, “again, with this wind chill it can only take up to a few seconds for frostbite to kick in.”
You need to take care of your vehicle in the cold as well.
Don Szarko from AMA says extremely cold temperatures like the ones we’re expecting can kill an old car battery.
Szarko explains trying to squeeze in one last winter on old tires won’t cut it either.
“This is the time to make sure that your batteries are performing properly, your tires are giving you the right amount of traction, and your vehicle is properly maintained,” says Szarko
While tow trucks are trying to get to everyone who needs them, the wait time is currently around three hours.
Szarko says the best way to avoid needing AMA’s help is to take care of your vehicle and adjust your driving habits to the weather.
