Enmax is being slapped with a $10,000 fine from the City of Calgary for causing quite a traffic delay at the beginning of the week.
It’s is the maximum fine that can be imposed.
The company failed to meet the conditions of a permit issued for work along 6th Avenue and 1st Street SE which was supposed to be done at 5 a.m., but stretched well into the mid-morning hours.
Even Mayor Nenshi got stuck in the traffic jam tweeting about the problem and ensuring others he’d look into it.
The Director of Roads for the city, Ryan Justin, says it barely covers the cost of having the road shut down.
“The impact on transit alone was 200 extra hours of overtime as a result of the drivers being not able to get their passengers where they needed to on time,” explains Jestin.
He says that does not include the lost productivity all over the city.
Calgary’s service phone line, 311, received 500 calls Monday morning from commuters frustrated by the situation.
