Calgary officials may be dipping into city reserve funds to help pay for upgrades to taxi cabs, required for a new bylaw.

A committee will debate Tuesday whether to approve a one-time $478,000 withdrawal from the reserve to cover the costs of computer system upgrades.

The bylaw changes require cab owners to submit vehicle GPS and other data from taxi metres.

If the proposal is nixed, fees for taxi driver and broker licenses as well as plate fees could be on the rise.

According to The Calgary Sun, a city report warns against the sustainability of this practice moving ahead.
