More than six weeks after a man lost his life in a house fire, charges against the owners of the home have been filed.

Back on September 12th, fire crews rescued four men at  322-25th avenue southwest.

One of the men later died in hospital.

The owners of the rooming house are facing a total of 12 charges each for various fire code violations, ranging from failing to provide smoke alarms to fire extinguishers.

Each charge carries a maximum fine of $15,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both.

Annop Bungay and Deepti Bungay are scheduled to appear in court January 9th. 2013.

Calgary’s Fire Marshall Ed Kujat tells 660News, he hopes the charges will serve as a wake up call to all property owners about the importance of providing a safe environment for their renters or tenants.

Kujat also says if somebody doesn’t think fire safety in their building is up to snuff, they can call 3-1-1 and the fire department’s safe housing team will investigate.
