The music may have died on cue but the dancing went on without a hitch.

Calgarians dressed in their zombie best showed up at Eau Claire mall for the third annual “Thrill Calgary” dance-off featuring the legendary ghoulish moves from Michael Jackson’s smash cult 80s hit, Thriller.

The event started in 2009, in Toronto, as a tribute to the King of Pop. The craze which has spread worldwide has participants re-enacting, in-sync, the infamous six-minute classic choreography.

All species of Calgarian zombies came out in full whacky wardrobe–from wee tots to grannies– all grooving, claws out.

Charmaine Bradley and Kristen Au won a prize for their “zombie wind-up dolls” getup.

“I did this event last year and it was a really good time. So I actually rounded up a few friends to join this year,” says Au, adding the daylight ambiance was a bit different from previous years where the event took place at night.

Nevertheless, fun was had by all who turned out.

Organizer T.J. Madigan says Thrill Calgary helped local dreams come true today –  as all proceeds went toward the Calgary Food Bank.

Madigan, dressed as a zombie Ninja Turtle, said he wasn’t mystified by a major music malfunction.

”It’s a testament to Calgary — our sound went down, our speakers blew and everybody still did the dance in perfect time for the flash mob. It was awesome!” Madigan remarked.

“It still counts — even if we did it without music — we still had a great turnout in Calgary … in sync with the rest of the world — which we did.”

He hopes to find out within a couple weeks whether the Calgary event earned a world record for its terrifying turnout.
