Homeless numbers in Calgary are on the rise.
The Calgary Homeless Foundation reports 3,576 people were homeless as of August, as compared to 3,190 in January.
The foundation is pointing to a number of factors for the rise, including people migrating here for jobs.
President and CEO of the Foundation John Rook tells 660News, what to tell people who are planning to move out west:
“People get excited because they think they’re coming to this economic capital of Canada and that everything is going to be rosy. There are good jobs here as well as low end service jobs, but there just isn’t enough affordable housing in Calgary,” says Rook.
Rook notes they’re trying to address concerns about shelter beds before the temperatures really plummet.
“We’ve worked with some agencies in Calgary and we’re adding some shelter beds so the government has given us some dollar support for that; to work towards no one freezing to death, we’re going to increase the number of emergency winter shelter beds by between 200 and 250″.
Rook cautions newcomers to have a plan for where you’re going to live, ahead of time.
