The Alberta government is taking steps in proposed new education legislation to eradicate bullying.

Education Minister Jeff Johnson introduced a bill in the legislature on the first day of the fall sitting on Tuesday.

Johnson tells 660News, the new law includes some of the toughest language in the country on anti-bullying rules.

It also gives principals more power to go after those who bully students not only on school grounds, but on school buses and over the internet.

The bill has been introduced twice before, but has died on the order paper before it could pass.

It most recently failed to pass in the spring after Christian home-school groups feared it would force them to teach their children concepts that run counter to their faith.

The government says that was not the case but has changed the wording in the new bill anyway to relieve concerns.

Bruce McAllister of the opposition Wildrose Party says it was the right thing to do, but should have been done all along.

The target date for implementing the law is the fall of 2015.
