At least one member of Parliament isn’t happy with this week’s changes to the MP’s pension plan which will bring their pensions more in line with those of ordinary Canadians.

Calling the changes “cowardly,” Edmonton MP Peter Goldring, a former member of the Tory caucus, tells the Calgary Herald that the changes will make it tougher to attract top quality politicians to run for office.

Under the reforms, MP’s will eventually contribute $39,000 annually to their pension plans — up from $11,000 — and they will have to wait until age 65 to start collecting.

MP’s earn nearly $152,000 in base salary, but Goldring figures Parliamentarians could eventually end up with about $50,000 in annual take home pay.
