A Quebec company that voluntarily recalled its antimicrobial foaming hand soap — found to be contaminated with harmful bacteria — has expanded its recall to include its hand sanitizer.
Avmor voluntarily recalled Avmor Ltd.’s Antimicrobial Foaming Hand Soap (Triclosan 0.3%) earlier this week and expanded its recall to include 19 more lots.
It also recalled 21 lots of X3 Clean Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer (Benzalkonium chloride 0.13%), as a precautionary measure.
A test conducted by Health Canada detected pseudomonas aeruginosa in the foaming hand soap, which can pose serious health risks.
The bacteria can trigger pneumonia, bone infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, meningitis and blood infections in people with weakened immune systems.
In healthy people, pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause local infections, abscesses and blood infection, Health Canada said.
Health Canada warned consumers not to use the products.
No adverse reactions have been reported, according to the health agency. The company has not received any reports either.
