The details are scarce as the RCMP continues their investigation after confirming a body found in Cochrane over the weekend are human remains.

The remains were found Saturday morning by children playing outside their home near Highway 22, and Sergeant Josee Valiquette tells 660News not much else is known.

“We’re trying to establish what happened,” says Valiquette. “How these remains ended up at that location and what happened before that?”

It’s not clear what kind of body parts were discovered, but Valiquette says authorities acted quickly.

“The items were seized and sent to the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Office,” she adds.  “The Medical Examiner’s Office … examination confirmed the remains were human.”

The remains were in an advanced state of decomposition.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit and Calgary Forensic Identification Section are involved in the investigation.
