School zones may soon be a lot safer for the drop off and pick up of students.

That’s the aim of a motion at council that wants to look at how to improve existing areas around schools and better plan school zones in the future.

Ward 2 Alderman Gord Lowe says there are a number of dangerous behaviours going on in school zones simply because of the way they are designed.

Lowe tells 660News, drivers are speeding, double parking, and ignoring stop signs.

A lack of proper drop off zones is also leading kids to jaywalking.

“Because nowadays many parents drive their kids to school, what we have is a mish-mash of things going on,” he says. “And some of it quite frankly very dangerous and quite alarming.”

The study may take several months to get back to city council for discussion.
