British Columbia Premier Christy Clark has posted a short video online urging people to speak out against bullying.

The appeal follows the tragic death of 15-year-old Amanda Todd, who took her own life on suicide prevention day, after posting a haunting YouTube video detailing the abuse she endured.

Using white pieces of paper with brief sentences in black marker, Todd explained the story of being lured by an unidentified male to expose her breasts by way of webcam, only to have those images posted elsewhere.

The teen says the bullying continued even after she changed schools, leading to severe depression and drug and alcohol abuse.

Coroner Barb McLintock says once her report is completed, the case will go to a child-death review, and could even be referred to a third-level review run by a multi-disciplinary team of experts.

She adds the tragedy reinforces the need to examine issues such as cyber bullying, social media bullying as well as school and mental health supports.

Psychologist Dr. Derek Swain says when is comes to suicide prevention, parents need to open up the lines of communication with their children.
