The Canadian Legacy Project is hoping to find a few generous Calgarians willing to clean out their pantry this winter for veterans and seniors in need.

Thursday morning they kicked off their 6th annual Veterans and Seniors Food Drive.

The freedoms that we enjoy today are because of our veterans and we need to make sure that our veterans don’t go hungry,” says President David Howard.

Last year volunteers helped to fill two warehouses full of non-perishable goods and raise $40,000 in cash donations.

Howard tells 660News they’re hoping to beat that record this year.

“There’s two warehouses, we need to fill both of those up with food and we’re hoping to raise $50,000 in cash,” he says.

Crown Surplus is once again helping to support the event.

Calgary Co-op has been brought on as a new sponsor.

The food giant plans to help the program through bag recycling and donating an additional 10 per cent for all food cards the Canadian Legacy Project purchases at their stores.

Howard adds the response from partners like the Calgary Board of Education has been overwhelming.

“They’ve sent out the information to all of their schools and are encouraging the faculty and students to raise funds and food,” he says.

In return veterans are visiting classrooms to give presentations on Canada’s involvement in past and present peace keeping missions.

The Food Drive runs from November 1st to the 15th.

Calgarians who’d like to make a donation is being urged to stop at the Crown Supply.

Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $20.
