The Calgary Parking Authority says parking in the city is so pricey because we have such a vibrant downtown.

A recent survey by Colliers revealed monthly unreserved parking in the city is the most expensive in the country, but the CPA says it’s because demand is so high.

Manager of the Calgary Parking Authority Troy McLeod explains the system is set up to promote other ways of getting around in the core.

“When a new building goes into the downtown, it’s been a long standing policy to provide a reduced supply, and that reduced supply is to help promote other modes of transportation such as transit, walking and cycling.” He says.

McLeod estimates anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 new parking spaces may open up – but time may tell whether parking prices will be on their way down.

Director of research at Colliers Ian McCullough doesn’t see any change coming.

He says parking tends to be built for office towers and condos, and holds just enough space for employees and tenants.
