A major road on the city’s east side reopens Saturday, after years of construction.
52nd Street will be wide open with six lanes of brand new pavement right through from Glenmore Trail to 130th Avenue S.E.
The new roadway is expected to take some of the pressure off of Deerfoot Trail and Barlow Trail.
The massive, $110-million road widening project is finally finished, after construction closed the road in three phases.
Money for the project came from the provincial and federal governments.
Alberta laid-down $66-million, while Ottawa covered $34.5-million.
Alberta Transportation Minister, and former Calgary Alderman, Ric McIver says the expansion has been the dream of many people for a long time.
“I remember the phrase often used by constituents when they called they office, ‘Well Ric, will you fix that goat trail?”‘ McIver reminisced. “Well, it’s no longer a goat road.”
The latest phase took a year to complete, building two bridges and extra lanes along a stretch between 94th Ave to 106th Ave and had all lanes closed throughout that time.
