A Calgary man has died following a drowning in Lake Newell near Brooks.

Constable Wade Oliver tells 660News, a local boater came across a kayak around 6:30 Friday evening.

“As they approached, they noticed the individual floating in the water. It appeared he was deceased. They contacted emergency crews and attempted CPR after bringing him to shore,” says Oliver. “EMS crews declared him deceased on scene.”

Oliver says the man was wearing a life jacket, but it was not done up properly.

RCMP believe he was travelling alone and an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death as a drowning.

The name of the man is not being released until his next of kin is notified.
