The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is issuing a warning to the public not to consume, serve, use or sell certain beef products sold by the XL Foods plant in Brooks.
Whole muscle cuts have been added to the list of recalled ground beef products adding certain products may be contaminated with E-coli.
A list of the detailed products is expected to be released by the company shortly.
The new, larger re-call comes after a lengthy investigation of the facility.
The recall and closure of the Lakeside plant has had a small impact on the cattle market, according to Manager and Senior Analyst with Canfax Brian Perillat.
“It’s one of the largest plants and there’s only two in Western Canada; At least this isn’t effecting border trade so we can ship cattle south so that does provide some support to our market but definitely has a big impact on our markets” said Perillat.
He notes the longer this closure and recalls go, the more impact it has on everything, especially feeder and calf prices heading into the Fall season.
Public Health officials continue to investigate several illnesses in both Alberta and abroad.
There’s no word yet on whether the source of contaminated meat can be traced back to XL Foods.
Health officials urge it may still take some time because there were many second and third hand distributors that need to be investigated.
Alberta Health Services recently announced it had sourced four cases of E-coli to Kirkland brand strip-loin grilling steak purchased from an Edmonton Costco.
