The town of Okotoks recently voted to lift it’s cap on population growth.
Predictions over the next 70 years, the bedroom community south of Calgary could grow from 25 thousand to over 100 thousand people.
One of the biggest challenges the town faces is finding enough water for it’s residents.
The town says it will seek agreements with it’s neighbours like High River, Black Diamond , Turner Valley and the MD of Rockyview.
Highwood MLA Danielle Smith, who is the leader of the official opposition Wildrose party, tells 660News she’s confident the town will be able to find the H2O it needs.
While the possibility of a water pipeline from Calgary is being shot down right now, Smith says Calgary can supply water for as many as 3 million people.
Environmental groups say they will be closely monitoring Okotoks growth, adding there are a number of things residents can also do to reduce their eco-footprint.
The province will also be involved, because it regulates water consumption.
