Apparently it’s not a problem eating away at trustees at the Calgary Board of Education.

According to the Calgary Herald, the C.B.E. has rejected the idea of a lunch monitor to student ratio in lunch rooms.  The Herald says, according to a report received through freedom of information laws, about 20 per cent of Calgary schools have ratios in which there are more than 50 students per lunch room monitor.

Despite the disparities school to school, the board argues it’s the quality of the supervision that counts.

The union representing the workers says the ratios have been a concern for quite some time. Lois Robb of the C.B.E. Staff Association notes supervisors have to be wary of a number of potential problems, including choking students. She notes there have been reports of one person being in charge of as many as 90 students.
