Hundreds of seasonal workers with the City of Calgary are being let go early because of a budget crunch.

The parks department’s maintenance budget was reduced by $2.3-million last year to help offset rising police and fire costs.

Alderman John Mar tells The Calgary Sun the city robbed parks to pay for fire.

Parks manager Todd Reichardt says if people see trash in their travels they can put in the nearest garbage can.

Alderman Jim Stevenson tells 660News he’s not overly worried about the scaled-back fall cleanup of green spaces.

He says if a problem does pop up, he’s confident crews will be dispatched to take care of it.

In another austerity move, the cafeteria at city hall is slated to be closed before the end of the year.

A recent study has concluded the facility isn’t financially viable; the cafeteria not only needs $1-million in renovations, but sales have been on the decline and the eatery is also facing increased competition from other restaurants in the core.
