Cadillac Fairview Corporation has filed an application with the City of Calgary to grow by up to one-million square feet.

Executive vice-president of development, Wayne Barwise, tells 660News they don’t want to get into specific details of the expansion until it’s cleared the proper channels.

There’s speculation the addition will be a mix of retail and office space along with a residential component and more parking.

Just last week, Chinook announced high-end U.S. retailer Nordstrom will be taking over the Sears location in the mall in the fall of 2014.

Estimates say the addition of Nordstrom and Target at Chinook will push up annual retail sales at the mall to almost $1-billion.

Cadillac Fairview is also behind the new 36-storey, 850-thousand square foot Calgary City Centre project downtown in Eau Claire.

Inter Pipeline has already signed a lease for part of the building.

Scotia Capital Economist Fred Ketchen says retailers the world over a chasing the almighty consumer dollar, which have been in abundance over the years in Calgary.

He calls the expansion announcement by Cadillac Fairview a vote of confidence in the local economy.
