Marriage is on the decline in Calgary and divorce rates are up according to figures released Wednesday by Statistics Canada in the latest portrait of what makes up Canadian families.
The data comes from the 2011 census, which also shows married couples still make up the majority of family units across the country.
Married couples in Calgary now account for 73.4 per cent of families; that’s down a fifth of a percentage point compared to census results in 2006, but is still much higher than the national average of 67 per cent.
What’s new with this latest survey is the tracking of stepfamilies, where at least one parent has a biological or adopted child for the first time.
They make up 5.7 per cent of Calgary’s 330,000 families.
Divorce rates are up but so is same sex marriage, which now makes up almost one per cent of all families in Calgary.
