CAW says it is making progress with at least one of the automakers

There appears to be some hope in contract talks between the Canadian Auto Workers union and the big-three automakers.

The CAW says it is making progress with at least one of the companies on wages.

The union would not say whether it was General Motors, Ford or Chrysler.

Unconfirmed reports indicate there may be progress between the CAW and Ford and GM, while negotiations with Chrysler don’t appear to be going as well.

CAW Secretary Treasurer Peter Kennedy says the automakers have been pushing for permanent lower salaries, similar to an agreement made in the U.S. with the United Auto Workers Union.

“The key stumbling block all along, the companies have come into the bargaining fixed on a UAW-style two-tier employee, and we’ve resisted that because we think a permanent two-tier system doesn’t work for the union or the company,” Kennedy said.

The CAW has said it could target all three companies in a strike.

As things stand, a walk out at any of the three automakers could happen just before midnight Monday, however the deadline could be extended if their is progress at the bargaining table.
