The Harper government has talked a lot about being tough on crime, but Saturday hundreds of correctional officers got tough on the Tories.

Around 500 workers from across the country rallied in front of the Stephen Harper’s office in Calgary, urging to have more of a voice about decisions regarding incarceration.

Officer Pierre Mallette said he’s been traveling across the country visiting jails and there are three major issues the rally was meant to raise.

“The overcrowding, the double-bunking to inmate by cell and the population management,” he said.

Mallette also criticized the government’s decision to close three institutions and cutting budgets which will affect rehabilitation.

“Where are we going to put all those inmates, we’re going to transfer all those inmates to other institutions, but when they’re going to arrive to the other institutions, they cannot walk with the others, we’re going to have to manage that,” he said.

He said they have no problem accepting the new law, but they need to have more consultation.
