Thanks to a little financial help from the federal and provincial governments, the Lions Club of Calgary is celebrating the grand opening of the newly built Lions Village.

The man overseeing the project at the corner of Crowchild Trail and Kensington Road in the northwest says they can now help more financially challenged seniors.

“It is a testament to the resolve of all the stakeholders involved in the Lions Village that this project, spearheaded by the Lions Club of Calgary, has been completed on time and on budget. The federal and Alberta governments, the architects of NORR Architects, the Centron Group and the countless thousands of hours donated by our volunteers can collectively take great pride in the knowledge that they played key roles in making Lions Village a reality today,” said Otto Silzer, Co-chair, Treasurer of the Lions Club of Calgary.

Silzer adds even with the opening of the Lions Village, there is still an acute shortage of affordable housing for seniors in the city.

This project cost $20 million and is home to 90 units for 130 tenants.

The housing unit is expected to be 20 per cent full by October and open houses will be held every weekend until it is full.
