It might have fallen short of setting a Guinness world record, but the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank collected more than 520,000 pounds of food in a single-day blitz, Saturday.
The effort, which included some 10,000 volunteers going door-to-door to pick up collection bags, means the groceries will be on the tables of Calgary families within six weeks.
That’s according to the food bank spokesperson Kathryn Sim who tells the Calgary Herald last year the organization fed 150,000 Calgarians. It’s estimated that 40 per cent of those clients are children.
The Inter-Faith Food Bank was hoping to re-establish a one-day collection record. It first set the Guinness World Record four years ago, collecting half a million pounds of food in one day. That record was eclipsed by an American charity last year.
Saturday, the Inter-Faith Food Bank had a goal of collecting 560,000 pounds of groceries, but had to settle for a little bit more than 520,000 pounds
