A 56-year-old Calgary woman is reminding restaurant owners of the rights of blind people with guide dogs.
Helen McFadyen was denied entry to two Chinatown restaurants this past Wednesday with her guide dog Camila in tow.
Provincial regulations state people with qualified service dogs can’t be denied access to any location where the general public is allowed. If someone with a guide dog is denied those rights, violators can face fines of up to $3,000.
McFadyen says people are unfamiliar with the law and the whole idea of guide dogs.
One of the restaurant owners, Tony Li of the Golden Orchid, admitted to the Calgary Herald that he wasn’t aware of the rules.
