NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – Niagara police have suspended their search for evidence in connection with the discovery of a torso on last week.
The ground and water search on Wednesday failed to turn up anything new.
Officers conducted a ground search for Chippewa to Fort Erie, which they said is part of the ongoing investigation and not due to any new leads.
The torso of a middle-aged woman was found floating in the Niagara River by tourists on-board the Maid of the Mist tour boat on Aug. 29.
She has yet to be identified.
At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, police made a second appeal to the public for help with identifying the middle aged female.
Investigators said they have ruled out most missing people — around 50 cases — who fit the victim’s description.
“Additional cases come in on a regular basis. We are reviewing them. We are still looking at tips but based at this point in the investigation, we need the public to start reaching out to members that they haven’t heard from of their families,” a Niagara officer told the media.
“Specifically, we ask that you contact female family members that you have not heard from recently. Contact coworkers who have not shown up to work to check on their welfare. Check on neighbours with unexplained absences.”
The woman is white, 31 to 55 years old, and has had two caesarean sections. Investigators believe the torso had been in the water for several days before it was discovered.
Niagara police said they will continue to follow up on investigative leads that have been forwarded to their tip line, while New York State Police are also checking their missing person case files.
An earlier search of the Niagara River did not turn up any additional body parts.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
