Calgary’s police chief wants demerit points added to the fines that are currently issued to drivers caught not paying attention behind the wheel.

Rick Hanson says fines of $172 aren’t sending a strong enough message to offenders.

Since the law was introduced just over a year ago, Calgary police have issued more than 3,600 tickets, or just over 10 a day.

Hanson plans to raise the issue of beefing up the distracted driving law when he meets with his provincial colleagues in November in Edmonton.

Alison Redford, who was Alberta’s justice minister before becoming premier, says she will consider the suggestion.

Redford says she thinks the current legislation is good, but adds if police say more needs to be done it’s important for government to listen.
