An Airdrie woman is calling for all pitbulls to be muzzled after a rash of attacks in the past few weeks.

Her petition comes after a labrador was attacked Wednesday by a pitbull in Northwest Calgary.

The dog had to be tasered by police.

Alison Prentice’s daughter got an up-close encounter with a pitbull when one attacked her labradoodle, injuring its legs and ears.

Prentice tells 660News she’s not the only one who no longer feels safe in off leash parks in Airdrie.

“I have a young niece who has a brand new baby and has told me she won’t leave her area in Airdrie because it’s a walk through off-leash area,” she explains.  “So she’s not comfortable taking her two year old and her brand new baby for a walk.”

She says she doesn’t want to ban the breed, just make it safer for all dogs and all people.

“I’m an advocate for animals, I love them, that’s why I don’t want to see them put down, I just want it to be safe for my 69-year-old neighbour to feel free to walk her dog.” Prentice says.

Prentice is beginning a petition she plans to take to council on September 17.
