After having so much fun Saturday at the Calgary Highland Games, undoubtedly some of the competitors are off to Canmore for another games competition on Sunday.
It’s estimated that as many as 10,000 people attended Saturday’s event in Springbank on the western edge of Calgary. And it wasn’t just about kilts, haggis and men swinging around heavy medieval objects. About 200 Highland dancers also took part in the day’s events, showcasing their technical expertise as well as their pride in heritage.
Lorna McDonald, one of the organizers of the dance portion of the games, tells the Calgary Herald that Highland dancing is both a sport and an art form. She says that at one time she took ballet, but dropped the art form in favour of Highland dancing, adding: “There’s something about it. It’s so different.”
Sunday’s Highland Games in Canmore begin at 8am and run until about 5 p.m..
