Hundreds of athletes rolling into Calgary this weekend, will stop to remember a local teen, killed taking part in the sport he loved.
Officials with the 2012 IGSA World Championship, the premiere event for skateboard and street luge racing, will stop to remember Duncan McRae.
The 13 year old Millrise youth died after losing control of his longboard Tuesday and crashed into a cable fence.
He received serious throat injuries and later died in hospital.
President of the IGSA Marcus Rietema calls it a tragedy and tells 660News it’s rocked their close-knit community.
“Whenever we lose a skateboarder, everyone is just gutted by it,” he says. “Here’s a 13 year old, and that’s what we love…… that’s the secret of our sport and it just kills us.”
Given the recent tragedy, he says they’re still in the process of trying to organize the tribute.
They’ve scheduled it for Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Canada Olympic Park.
Rietema says they’re also trying to get in touch with McRae’s family in hopes they can attend.
He adds a tragic event days before the championship and a memorial service are a first for the event.
“From the very beginning, we’ve been doing this for 15 years and have really been stressing safety,” he says. “We’ve also encouraged riders to wear full leather suits and helmets.”
Police say McRae was wearing all of the appropriate gear.
The 2012 IGSA World Championships begin Friday morning.
