Bagpipes played as hundreds of police and emergency workers marched through the streets of High River this afternoon.
The large turnout was to honour slain Peace Officer Rod Lazenby.
The retired Mountie was killed in the line of duty responding to a dog complaint while enforcing bylaws in the M.D. of Foothills August 10th.
Among those who turned out to pay tribute were several members of the RCMP, Calgary Police Service, peace officers and the Calgary Fire Department.
Colleagues from various stops along Lazenby’s career told stories of his character, love of hockey and tales of his courage.
Mike Butcher met Lazenby in 1979 when they worked as RCMP members in Vancouver and he described his best friend as unselfish and someone who would never promote himself.
Colleagues also made note of his love of community, family, animals and mexican food.
Lazenby leaves behind a wife, daughter and two sons.
His daughter, Meghan, thanked the well over 700 uniformed first responders for paying respects to her father.
As the first Alberta peace officer killed in the line of duty, peace officers wore a blue memorial ribbon on their left lapel out of respect for the loss of one of their own.
