It’s been an exceptionally rough year for black bears in national parks around Alberta.

Two more bears were killed over the weekend after being hit by cars, bringing the total death count to 16 this summer.

That’s twice the yearly average.

One died Saturday in Banff, south of the Silverhorn overflow campground; another was killed Sunday in Yoho National Park.

Vehicle strikes are responsible for 12 of the 16 deaths.

The Calgary Sun reports Parks Canada is working to monitor the bears and minimize this type of death.
