A 52-year-old man from Martindale allegedly responsible for shooting his wife early Monday has turned himself in.

Nihad Abdullah Ibrahim was already facing charges of breaking a no-contact order his wife had against him before the incident and CPS’ investigation includes his five counts of failing to comply with the order.

Police would not reveal the state Ibrahim was in when he handed himself over to police.

His 58-year-old common-law wife is still recovering in hospital but police won’t give her whereabouts for her own safety.

Spokesperson Kevin Brookwell said they are looking at why he was able to reoffend.

“Many domestic violence offenders are released,” he said. “This goes back to that complexity, for many of them having, just having been arrested is enough to stop the violence that goes on in the home.”

Every year, Calgary police respond to 15,000 domestic violence calls.

Brookwell warned the public to trust their instincts in domestic violence situations and seek help as soon as possible.
